- An Extreme Heat Warning is in effect for the entire tri-state region from Wednesday afternoon until Friday evening as feels-like temperatures are expected to reach 115 degrees Fahrenheit in New York.
- New Yorkers are also bracing for the chance of severe storms Wednesday afternoon, alongside the dangerously high temperatures across New York City.
- “Heat index values are forecast to reach up to 115F for much of the area on Thursday and Friday,” the National Weather Service warned. “There is a high risk of heat related illness (heat exhaustion, heat stroke), especially those with underlying illness, elderly/very young, performing strenuous outdoor activity, or non-acclimated (visitors from cooler climes).”
- Mayor Zohran Mamdani has urged residents to plan to spend time in air-conditioned spaces whenever possible, locate their nearest cooling center, avoid strenuous activity during the hottest hours and learn the signs of heat illness.
- Mamdani said to call 311 if you see someone experiencing homelessness who may need assistance and, “Do what New Yorkers do best: look out for one another. Check on older adults, people with disabilities, neighbors with chronic illnesses, and anyone who may not have access to air conditioning. A simple phone call or knock on the door could save a life.”
