Lando Norris claimed an eighth pole position of the season at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix as Lewis Hamilton suffered an early elimination in his final qualifying as a Mercedes driver.
Norris led a McLaren one-two, with team-mate Oscar Piastri joining him on the front row as the team strengthened their grip on the constructors’ championship.
The British team are battling Ferrari to claim the constructors’ crown this weekend, holding a 21-point lead over the Scuderia.
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc has endured a challenging weekend to boost McLaren’s chances and will start Sunday’s race at the back of the field.

QUALIFYING REPORT: Lewis Hamilton suffers ill fortune on final Mercedes bow as Lando Norris claims Abu Dhabi pole
09:00
Kieran Jackson
If there was any need for a moment to sum up Lewis Hamilton’s final season for Mercedes, in what is set to be his worst-ever F1 season, it was this gigantic slice of ill fortune in Saturday’s qualifying under the Abu Dhabi night sky.
In need of improvement in his final lap in Q1, Hamilton looked pacey until a loose bollard flew below his car floor and stayed there, wedged, for the rest of his lap. Needless to say, it impacted his speed and he qualified third-slowest in his 246th and final qualifying session for Mercedes. He will start 16th on Sunday, due to grid penalties.
Contrastingly, Hamilton’s former team McLaren had a dream qualifying session and they are now on the cusp of their first constructors’ title in 26 years. British driver Lando Norris led home a one-two finish, with Oscar Piastri alongside him on the front row, amid joyous celebrations for the papaya-clad team on the pit-wall.

Christian Horner hits back at Toto Wolff: ‘I’d rather be a terrier than a wolf’
08:04
Kieran Jackson
Christian Horner has responded to Toto Wolff’s insult amid a feud between their drivers Max Verstappen and George Russell.
The Red Bull Team Principal hit out at the Mercedes driver for being “hysterical” at the Qatar Grand Prix, with Verstappen hit with a one-place demotion on the grid for blocking the Briton during qualifying.
And Wolff was left incensed by the remark and criticism of his driver, hitting back on a fiery Thursday at Yas Marina Circuit to label his colleague “a yapping little terrier”.
But Horner has laughed off the comment and claimed he would rather be a terrier than a wolf.

Lewis Hamilton’s farewell at Mercedes ends the greatest era in F1 history – but not in the way you think
05:02
Kieran Jackson
The bemusement reverberated across the paddock. It is difficult not to overemphasise the brutal reaction the cut-throat Formula One circus – whether it be media, ex-drivers or fans – had in September 2012 when, to the astonishment of everyone, Lewis Hamilton decided to leave McLaren for Mercedes.
Even the wishes of his father and manager, Anthony, were ignored. As Jeremy Clarkson put it so tactlessly on a 2012 episode of Top Gear: “Is that not a bit like moving from Manchester United to West Ham?” And sorry Hammers fans – it was not a compliment.
Yet six world championships, 12 years and 84 grand prix victories later, Hamilton’s bold plunge into unchartered waters was his best-ever decision.

Who could replace Sergio Perez in 2025 F1 seat at Red Bull?
Saturday 7 December 2024 20:40
Kieran Jackson
Sergio Perez looks set to be on the way out from Formula One and Red Bull after a torrid 2024 campaign.
Various reports after Sunday’s race in Qatar state that Red Bull are set to move on from the 34-year-old after the season finale in Abu Dhabi this weekend, despite a contract which lasts until the end of the 2025 F1 season.
The Mexican’s seat has been shrouded in uncertainty for some time, as he languishes 277 points behind teammate Max Verstappen in the standings with one grand prix remaining. His poor form means Red Bull are guaranteed to finish third in the constructors’ championship, despite Verstappen’s drivers’ title triumph.
But who is the leading candidate to replace Perez at Red Bull? Will Christian Horner look within the team’s wider ecosystem or further afield on the grid?
The Independent takes a look at the candidates to replace Perez at Red Bull:

Toto Wolff apologises to Lewis Hamilton for ‘idiotic’ mistake in Abu Dhabi
Saturday 7 December 2024 19:30
Kieran Jackson
Toto Wolff has apologised to Lewis Hamilton for an “idiotic mistake” after the British driver endured a torrid final qualifying for Mercedes at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Hamilton, who leaves for Ferrari next year, needed to improve on his final lap in Q1 and was driving in a lot of traffic as he started his lap at the Yas Marina Circuit.
Kevin Magnussen then dislodged a bollard ahead and, in a huge stroke of misfortune, the bollard became wedged in the bottom of Hamilton’s car. He qualified 18th-fastest but will start tomorrow’s race – his final F1 grand prix for Mercedes – in 16th due to grid penalties.

Max Verstappen after qualifying P5:
Saturday 7 December 2024 18:31
Kieran Jackson
"It was a difficult weekend, it's been very difficult to hook up the corners, it showed in Q3, it was not good for lap top, it might look good, it would've put us second, which is not bad, but it sums up our season, the car has been a little bit unpredictable.
"Sometimes you can overcome these things, but that was what happened in qualifying."
On Russell situation: "We can have our disagreements [in the GPDA], but we're always fighting for the same cause. It'll be fine. We have our disagreements, it's important we all go on holiday and spend some time with family, it'll sort itself out."

Charles Leclerc after qualifying 14th-fastest
Saturday 7 December 2024 17:41

"I knew it was on the limit, it's difficult to judge, I was out of the limit in Q2, it hurts, it's two hard hits in two days, all in all, it's not an easy last weekend. It doesn't make me less motivated for tomorrow.
"I still want to go very optimistic, it's still possible, I'll push to come back in the first two positions of the race."
Leclerc will start P19 tomorrow due to his 10-place grid penalty.

Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2024: George Russell ‘not thinking about’ Max Verstappen
Saturday 7 December 2024 16:42
Kieran Jackson
“There was more pace on Lewis’ side, he’s been ahead of me, we’ve been flummoxed why we’ve been off the pace,” George Russell tells Sky Sports.
“From Q1, just off the pace, we don’t know why, P7 is a better result than I thought going into the session. I’m not even thinking about it to be honest, we’ve got bigger things to be worried about.
“It’s got more air time than it deserved, we wanted to show, us as a group, we’re united, we know what we want from the sport, that was the message we wanted to show.”
Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2024: Toto Wolff rages at ‘idiotic’ mistake to let down Lewis Hamilton
Saturday 7 December 2024 15:50
Kieran Jackson
"I need to apologise to Lewis, everybody who works hard for him, the set-up we choose, was to experiment next year, but we totally let him down,” Toto Wolff tells Sky Sports.
“An idiotic mistake, not going early, inexcusable, I'm rarely been so down about what has happened, maybe summarises the last races wit him, but this has been the worst, it was just idiotic.
“We were lucky they raced through the traffic, without the bollard it might have worked, but you don’t risk so much in Q1, our most valuable racing driver ever, in this sport, gets out in Q1 because we make a mistake.
“It doesn’t ruin all the legacy we have him, I can only say sorry to him. He was there, he’d have had a chance at a podium I think, now it’s pretty much impossible for him.”
