Oscar Piastri won the sprint race in Qatar ahead of team-mate Lando Norris as McLaren closed in on a first constructors’ title in 26 years.
Much has been made of Norris’ lacklustre starts this season but the British driver blasted away from pole before playing the team game to help Piastri.
Norris then moved over for Piastri at the final bend after they traded positions in Brazil earlier this month.
George Russell finished third, while Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc were fourth and fifth respectively for Ferrari.

SPRINT QUALIFYING REPORT: Lando Norris bounces back from F1 title loss with sprint race pole in Qatar
13:36
Kieran Jackson
Lando Norris bounced back from his championship defeat to secure pole position for Saturday’s sprint race in Qatar.
The British driver, mocked by Max Verstappen for failing to win the title in a McLaren deemed superior to the rest of the field, saw off Mercedes’ George Russell by just 0.063 seconds.
Norris’ pole, combined with Piastri qualifying third, hands a timely boost to McLaren as they bid to land their first constructors’ championship since 1998.

REVIEW: The never-ending legacy of Ayrton Senna continues in dynamic Netflix bio-drama
12:47
Kieran Jackson
There’s something about sport, and the global fandom the lead protagonists generate, which triggers a propensity to hero-worship. Add to that the lives of fallen heroes, particularly those taken too soon, and the deep-rooted desire to remember and reminisce are intertwined with anniversaries and depictions in modern drama. Whether it be Netflix, Prime or Apple TV, they’re all at it.
Yet as 2024 nears its conclusion, there really can be no doubting the omnipresent legacy Brazilian idol Ayrton Senna left on the world.

Mick Schumacher makes shock career switch away from F1
12:30
Kieran Jackson
Mick Schumacher has decided to leave his role as a Mercedes F1 reserve driver at the end of the 2024 season.
The 25-year-old German, son of seven-time F1 world champion Michael Schumacher, was dropped by Haas at the end of the 2022 season after a two-year run but in the two years since has been an understudy for George Russell and Lewis Hamilton at the Silver Arrows.
However, having not appeared once on an F1 weekend and having not secured a race seat for 2025, Schumacher has decided to leave the team and explore new opportunities after what he described as a “tough” two years watching in the garage.

Verstappen told sections of the media after the race in Vegas that he would have won the 2024 title “even earlier” in a McLaren – and at “pretty much the same” time in a Ferrari. Red Bull are currently third in the constructors’ championship.
Yet Norris, when asked about Verstappen’s statement in Qatar, sharply rebuked: “He should start doing comedy or something. He can say whatever he wants.
“Of course, I completely disagree, as I would. He’s good, but, yeah, it’s not true.”

Zhou Guanyu says Ferrari are “really interested” in signing him up as a reserve driver for the 2025 season.
Ferrari have already confirmed their driver line-up for next year, with Lewis Hamilton replacing Carlos Sainz as Charles Leclerc’s teammate.

“We’ve definitely made steps in our understanding. It’s the medium-speed that we need to find a bit of performance. Well done to Lando, he’s done a good lap there.
On Vegas celebrations: “Winning a title in Vegas is a good and a bad thing! I half-expected Max to go missing like a certain movie! He rightly celebrated with some of the guys and girls with the team, the rest of us were on flights to Europe or here.”
