Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been named Arsenal's new club captain

The decision arrives after Granit Xhaka was stripped of the armband.

Gunners boss Unai Emery confirmed on Tuesday that Xhaka was no longer part of his leadership group, after his altercation with home fans during the 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace last month.

Aubameyang was already one of Emery's five designated captains, alongside Xhaka, Alexandre Lacazette, Hector Bellerin and Mesut Ozil.

He has been rested for Wednesday's Europa League meeting with Vitoria, meaning Bellerin is likely to deputise.

"I had a meeting with him and told him he is no longer in the captain's group," said Emery on Tuesday.

"He accepted my decision. I needed to take a decision and now it's closed."
