Factory worker charged with murder of his mother

A factory worker has been charged with the murder of his mother, a bank executive, at the Alor Setar Magistrate’s Court.

ALOR SETAR: A 29-year-old factory worker was charged in the Magistrate’s Court here today with the murder of his mother earlier this month.

Amirul Shafiq Shamshul Zahari nodded in understanding after the charge was read before Magistrate Eliana Ismail. No plea was recorded as the case falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court.

He is accused of murdering Zahrullail Basir, 52, at a house in Taman Sultan Abdul Halim here between 3.15 am and 8 am on Feb 2.

The charge was framed under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the death penalty or imprisonment of 30 to 40 years and at least 12 strokes of the cane.

The court set May 11 for mention to obtain the post-mortem and forensic reports.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Noor Fatin Azera Norhisham prosecuted the case, while the accused was unrepresented.

Police received a call at 8.45 am on Feb 2 from another son of the victim informing them of the murder.

Amirul Shafiq, the victim’s eldest son, was arrested at 8.34 pm the same day aboard an express bus heading to Selangor.
