Fahmi says Safe Internet Campaign should reach FELDA and rural areas for digital safety and income opportunities
JEMPOL: The Safe Internet Campaign should be expanded to more rural areas, including FELDA settlements, to raise awareness of digital safety while creating opportunities for income generation through the digital economy, says Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil.
Such programmes, he said, should not be confined to urban and semi-urban areas, but instead be extended so that rural communities could also benefit.
He said the message on the importance of using the Internet safely was crucial as people were becoming increasingly dependent on it in their daily lives, including for income generation.
“I believe programmes like this are very well suited to the rural environment. I will ask the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) team to organise more programmes of this kind.
“We often see campaigns focused on urban and semi-urban areas, but I think they should also be brought to FELDA settlements. God willing, we will organise more programmes like this in the future,” he told reporters at the Community Carnival: Safe Internet Campaign at Felda Palong 2 here today.
At the same time, Fahmi said the ministry would ensure that more youths were exposed to opportunities in the digital economy, including the safe use of artificial intelligence (AI), supported by better internet connectivity.
“This is what we have started through entrepreneurship programmes at the National Information Dissemination Centre (NADI), but perhaps these need to be expanded because not all FELDA areas have a NADI centre.
“For example, becoming a TikTok Shop affiliate or selling products through Shopee, Lazada and other platforms. These modules are already being taught at NADI,” he said.
