Food delivery riders don’t exactly have things easy. Many a times, they have to ride through horrible weather in order to delivery meals and work long hours to support their families.

Though, a rider as well as Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil are now under fire for alleging that the rider has to borrow money in order to pay his phone bill as his salary isn’t enough to cover it. But, why are people angry at them about this?

Fahmi Fadzil took to his Facebook page to showcase the rider’s story, including how the father of 2, who earns about RM4,000 a month, has to borrow money from friends to pay his RM200 phone bill.

Fahmi Fadzil wrote, “His income is about RM4,000 a month and his wife does not work. That amount isn’t enough to cover the increasing cost of living. Even milk and baby diapers are expensive, sometimes he has to bear the medical costs of family members, he doesn’t have any savings.”

“What makes this sadder is that he has not been able to pay his phone bill for 2 months. There was a time when he had to borrow RM200 of his friend’s money just to pay the bill, considering the use of a phone is the most important need of a rider.”

And while the purpose of this post was to announce the initiative of a special internet package for food delivery riders, people couldn’t help but focus on the fact that the rider is using an expensive iPhone!

“The bill is RM200 a month? Is it a package that comes with the iPhone or what? My bill is only RM69. And it comes with unlimited calls.”

“Even I am just using a free Oppo. He is considered okay la, cannot afford to pay the bill but is using a 3-camera iPhone.”

“Cannot afford to pay the bill? The rider is using a 3-camera iPhone, YB. If it’s about milk for the children, then it’s a reasonable basic need. As if he has a lot of problems, he just can’t afford to pay his phone bill.”

“Can afford to use an iPhone, but cannot afford to pay the bill. Fahmi Fadzil really is good at dramatising things.”

What do you think? Should the rider have gone for a more affordable phone option or is this all an act?

Do feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section.
