The ongoing discourse surrounding a purported draft document on constituency funds has sparked a war of words between government officials, with Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil issuing a strong response to claims made by Bersatu Youth chief Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal.
Fahmi, in a recent press conference, refuted Wan Fayhsal's assertion that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had provided opposition leader Hamzah Zainudin with a draft agreement on constituency funds. Fahmi clarified that he had personally checked with the Prime Minister’s Office and the chief secretary to the government, both of whom confirmed that no such draft existed. Additionally, he had consulted with several political secretaries to government leaders, all of whom echoed the same sentiment.
Expressing his frustration, Fahmi suggested that Wan Fayhsal should refrain from commenting on matters he is not knowledgeable about. He questioned Wan Fayhsal's motives, implying that the Bersatu MP may have made the claim to salvage a situation following Deputy Prime Minister Fadillah Yusof's denial of the draft's existence.
Fahmi further highlighted the lack of presentation of the alleged draft during the opposition's meeting with the deputy prime minister, casting doubt on its existence. He criticized the opposition for spreading false information and urged them to refrain from making statements before negotiations on constituency funds were finalized.
Responding to Fadillah's earlier statement that no draft document was submitted during his meeting with Hamzah on March 19, Fahmi challenged Bersatu's Hulu Terengganu MP Rosol Wahid, who had referred to a draft agreement, to request a copy from the opposition leader.
On a separate note, Fahmi announced that RM206.78 million would be allocated over three years by the economy ministry, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), and telecommunications companies for the SMART 600 project in Sarawak. This project aims to enhance mobile broadband coverage in the state, with telcos contributing RM29.1 million annually, MCMC providing RM42.9 million for the first year, and the finance ministry allocating RM38.2 million for the subsequent years.
Fahmi highlighted the need for improved mobile broadband coverage in Sarawak, noting that out of the 600 towers in the state, only 169 are currently capable of providing 4G services. He reassured that efforts are underway to upgrade, construct, or relocate the remaining towers to improve coverage and connectivity in Sarawak.
