PKR information chief Datuk Fahmi Fadzil has officially confirmed his candidacy for a position in the party’s Central Leadership Council (MPP) in the upcoming party elections, pledging to revitalise the council and strengthen the party’s direction ahead of Malaysia’s 16th General Election.
Fahmi announced that he is withdrawing from the race for the party’s vice-presidency, opting instead to contest for a position in the Central Leadership Council (Majlis Pimpinan Pusat, MPP) in next month’s internal elections.
Fahmi, who is also the Communications Minister, said the decision was made after careful consideration of the party’s needs as it prepares for the 16th General Election (GE16).
He emphasised the importance of consolidating party machinery and strengthening internal coordination ahead of what he described as significant political challenges.
“We need to be stronger than we are now, because the challenges we face are substantial. I’m offering myself to help streamline the party’s operations at the MPP level. When the time comes, I’ll be on the ground campaigning,” he told reporters after attending the Hari Bersama Komuniti event at the National Information Dissemination Centre (Nadi) in Ayer Kuning.
Fahmi had previously declared his intention to contest the vice-presidency in March, citing a desire to continue contributing to the party’s growth and success.
Speaking at his Lembah Pantai parliamentary constituency Hari Raya open house on Saturday night, Fahmi then said the decision came after weeks of consultation and reflection.
“I have visited several states, held discussions with many leaders and assessed the need to contest. After giving it serious thought, I’ve made my decision and would like to officially announce today that I will be contesting a position in the MPP to strengthen the party and inject fresh energy into the council,” he told reporters.
Fahmi said he is committed to conducting a healthy, constructive campaign alongside fellow party members.
“Insya Allah, I will healthily campaign alongside my colleagues and present a new leadership dynamic, as this is the team that will steer the party, together with our unity government partners, into the 16th General Election,” he added.
PKR’s divisional elections are scheduled to take place from April 11 to 20, while polls for the party’s central leadership, including the Youth and Wanita wings, are set for May 24.
Fahmi’s announcement is expected to inject momentum into the party's internal race, with attention increasingly focused on the leadership lineup that will guide PKR into the next national election cycle. – April 13, 2025
