Fahmi, IGP, AG to meet TikTok over fake news, online safety issues

TIKTOK's management will be summoned to Bukit Aman this Thursday over the issue of spreading fake news and online safety.

Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said this was following the platform's delay in cooperating with the authorities, including several cases of spreading information involving an individual posing as a surgeon.

"TikTok was very slow in providing information to the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) to the point that I had to contact TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew," he said when met by reporters after the AI Grand Prix 2025 Conference in Kuala Lumpur.

He added that the meeting in Bukit Aman will be attended by the Inspector-General of Police and Attorney-General to emphasise the importance of social media legislation in Malaysia.

Meanwhile, the management of Meta will also be called in regarding pedophile content, 'school gang' activities and the dissemination of dangerous information via WhatsApp and Facebook.

"We found many problems occurring on these platforms, but they are not taking a serious stance. The dialogue process will continue and we will emphasise that they must comply with the laws of the country," he said.

Fahmi added that engagement sessions with social media companies will be held regularly every month to ensure that cybersecurity issues are dealt with more firmly. – September 2, 2025
