Police say a Proton Wira driver’s failed overtaking manoeuvre likely caused a collision with an MAF truck in Machang, killing one soldier.

MACHANG: A fatal crash involving a Malaysian Armed Forces truck is believed to have been caused by a car driver’s failed overtaking attempt.

The accident occurred at Kilometre 37.8 of Jalan Kota Bharu-Kuala Krai near Bukit Belah yesterday evening.

Machang police chief Supt Ahmad Shafiki Hussin said the Proton Wira driver was heading from Kota Bharu to Kuala Krai.

“The car driver, heading from Kota Bharu to Kuala Krai, is believed to have tried to overtake a vehicle and entered the opposite lane, leaving the MAF truck driver with no time to avoid a collision,” he stated.

The three-tonne Hicom truck was carrying four MAF personnel back to the Desa Pahlawan Camp in Kok Lanas from Tanah Merah.

One MAF personnel died at the scene of the 6.35 pm accident.

The other three soldiers sustained minor injuries, while the car driver was seriously injured.

All four survivors were taken to Machang Hospital for treatment.

Police are investigating the case under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
