Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Abdul Karim has called on the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to conduct a professional and unbiased investigation into former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, raising concerns over possible procedural violations.

Hassan, who previously served on the Parliamentary Special Committee on Corruption, questioned MACC’s approach, particularly its decision to publicly disclose evidence before the investigation was concluded. He argued that such actions could compromise due process and cast doubt on the agency’s impartiality.

“Evidence should only be revealed during court proceedings,” Hassan stated. “Yet, in this case, key evidence has already been presented at a press conference while the investigation remains incomplete. What purpose does this serve?”

He pointed out that the investigation papers had not yet been submitted to the Attorney General’s Chambers, yet Ismail Sabri had already faced intense media scrutiny. Hassan warned that premature public exposure of evidence could undermine the credibility of the case and damage the integrity of the investigation.

While reaffirming his support for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s anti-corruption drive, Hassan stressed that MACC must uphold professionalism and adhere strictly to legal boundaries. He emphasized that the agency, as an investigative body, should not overstep its role by acting as a prosecutor, as that responsibility belongs to the Attorney General’s Chambers.

"I trust MACC’s capabilities," Hassan said. "However, enforcement agencies must remain within their legal framework and avoid any actions that might appear prejudicial. In this case, there have been clear ethical lapses that must be addressed."

Hassan urged MACC to focus solely on its investigative responsibilities and ensure that its actions do not undermine the credibility of Malaysia’s legal system. He concluded by stating that while the fight against corruption is crucial, it must be conducted in a manner that upholds justice and respects due process.
