Fallen trees keep firefighters busy

KUNAK: A tree fell near a resident’s house in Kg Bagiang here and damaged the roof and part of its walls, Sunday.

A team of firefighters led by PBK II (KUP) Oma Tome rushed to the scene to remove tree branches that were stuck on the residential premises.

Head of the Kunak JBPM Fire and Rescue Department, Mohammad Omarbatha said his department received an emergency call at 3.48pm through the station’s line.

A team from the station with an EMRS vehicle went to the scene of the incident two kilometres from the Fire Station.

No casualty was reported. The operation ended at 4.48pm.

Meanwhile, in LAHAD DATU, its Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) received five emergency calls regarding fallen trees due to heavy rain and strong winds that hit the area, Sunday.

BBP Lahad Datu head, Sumsoa Rashid, said the first call was received at 3.10pm from Jalan Bypass.

He said the team rushed to the location and immediately cleared the fallen trees that blocked one lane from the direction of the airport to Jalan Tengah Nipah.

The work there was almost completed when BBP Lahad Datu received another report about a fallen tree on Jalan SM Cina.

According to Sumsoa, the third call was received at 3.50pm which also involved a fallen in Kampung Cocos, Jalan Segama.

The team rushed to the location, prioritising it over the other two cases in Jalan Asam and Jalan Segama because they did not involve property damage emergency.

He said the team using the FRT and EMRS machines went through a road flooded in two feet of water and the EMRS machines had to turn back because they could not pass due to the flood.

On arrival, the team found that the tree had crashed into a house and caused 30 per cent damage to the kitchen area.

He said the team carried out an operation to cut tree branches using chainsaws.

“No casualties were reported and our team ended the operation at 4.45pm after making sure there was no other danger.

“Our team returned to the station as the fallen trees on Jalan Asam and Jalan Segama were cleared by the road concessionaire,” he added.
