  • Andrew Malkinson has criticised the decision to deduct up to £10,000 in legal costs from his compensation after spending 17 years wrongly imprisoned for a rape he did not commit.
  • His conviction was quashed in 2023, making his case one of the most severe miscarriages of justice in British criminal history.
  • Mr Malkinson described the deductions for damage assessment and legal fees as 'penny-pinching' and 'vindictive', urging Justice Secretary David Lammy to fix the issue.
  • The Ministry of Justice stated they have increased the maximum compensation payable to £1.3 million and are awaiting findings from a Law Commission consultation on criminal appeals.
  • The actual perpetrator of the 2003 sex attack, Paul Quinn, was found guilty in April this year, after Mr Malkinson was wrongly picked out at an identity parade.
