A family from Rania on Monday met Sirsa Superintendent of Police Deepak Saharan, alleging several persons cheated them of lakhs of rupees by promising marriage for their son and later luring them into a “money-doubling” scheme.

The complainant, Bachan Kaur, said her unmarried son Sukhwinder Singh was searching for a suitable match when, in December 2025, some persons approached the family claiming they knew a well-educated girl from a respectable background. They allegedly showed photographs of the woman and arranged meetings between both families.

According to the complaint, the accused later took the family to Ghadsana in Rajasthan’s Ganganagar district, where the girl was introduced and engagement rituals were performed. When asked about the girl’s parents, the accused allegedly said they had died.

The complainant alleged after the meeting, the accused took the family to a local self-styled godman, who claimed the marriage could not take place for three months due to horoscope. The accused then allegedly persuaded the family to invest money with the godman, claiming he possessed a “machine” that could double cash.

Initially, the family allegedly handed over Rs 3,000 and received Rs 6,000 in return, which increased their trust. Later, on separate occasions in December 2025, the accused allegedly collected Rs 2 lakh and then another Rs 2.5 lakh from the family on the promise of doubling the money.

The complainant said her elder son Balwinder Singh was also taken to Ghadsana, where the accused allegedly returned doubled money once to build confidence before later refusing to return further sums.

When the family later enquired about the proposed bride, the accused allegedly first claimed she was unwell and later said she had died. In February 2026, the accused allegedly told them the money would not be returned.

The complainant alleged several other people had also been cheated in a similar manner using the same woman and fake marriage proposals.

SP Saharan assured the victims that appropriate action would be taken after investigation.
