Written by Hong Si-young, the story follows childhood friends San-ha, Ju-won and Hae-jun who turned into each other’s found family through high school. However, their bond is threatened when San-ha develops romantic feelings for Ju-won. Soon, circumstances force the trio to separate. Ten years later, the trio reunite and try to find their way back to each other.

Family by Choice ending explained: Do San-ha and Ju-won’s parents accept their relationship?
In the finale of the romantic Korean drama Family by Choice, lovebirds San-ha and Ju-won reveal their relationship to their parents. While San-ha’s father Dae-uk is happy for the children, Ju-won’s dad Jeong-jae refuses to accept the bond. While San-ha tries his best to get Jeong-jae’s approval, he fails to convince him.
Elsewhere, San-ha’s mother Jeong-hui visits Ju-won’s cafe and urges her to break up with her son so that he can lead a peaceful life. She then goes on to call their relationship a delusion and insists Ju-won to spare her son.
Unaware of the incident, San-ha meets his mother and opens up about his feelings for Ju-won. He comes clean about how he has been in love with Ju-won since childhood and how desperate he was for her affection all these years.
Later that day, San-ha musters up the courage once again and begs Jeong-jae to approve his relationship with his daughter. After an honest conversation, Jeong-jae finally accepts San-ha and Ju-won’s love for each other.

While fans of the romantic comedy might have expected their favourite “SanWon” couple to get married in the finale, a plot twist in the last episode reveals otherwise.
Hae-jun’s mother Seo-hyun, who has been in love with Jeong-jae for a long time, confesses her feelings for him, and it’s Seo-hyun and Jeong-jae who married in the last episode. Before the credits roll, San-ha, Ju-won and Hae-jun attend Seo-hyun and Jeong-jae’s wedding and celebrate their newly formed family of choice.
