A Singaporean man who traveled to Malaysia with his wife to celebrate Chinese New Year found himself in a harrowing situation after he was injured while defending his family from relentless attackers. The incident, which unfolded in Kluang, Johor, has left the family traumatized and searching for answers.

The wife, 42-year-old hairstylist Ms. Fang, recounted the ordeal to China Press, a Malaysian Chinese-language newspaper. She revealed that her family had been subjected to three days of continuous harassment by two unidentified men during the festive season. The assailants targeted their home, setting off firecrackers, splashing paint on the property, and smashing the windows of two cars parked outside. The family, fearing for their safety, was forced to retaliate using sticks to protect themselves and their home.

During the confrontation, Ms. Fang’s husband sustained multiple injuries, including wounds to his head, ankle, chest, and arms. Despite the severity of the situation, the family remains baffled about the motive behind the attacks. Ms. Fang emphasized that they do not owe money to any loan sharks, and no debt collection notices were left at the scene, ruling out the possibility of financial retaliation.

Ms. Fang’s mother disclosed that this was not the first time the family had been targeted. Similar incidents occurred in 2023 and 2024, but despite filing multiple police reports, the authorities have yet to provide any resolution or updates. “If our family has a feud with anyone, we hope the perpetrator can come forward and explain. We are willing to resolve the issue peacefully,” she said. “If they have mistaken us for someone else, we urge them to stop this harassment immediately.”

Ms. Fang shared a chilling detail about the attacks during her interview with Shin Min Daily News. On January 31, during one of the confrontations, the family managed to subdue and tie up one of the assailants. Upon questioning, the man revealed that he had been paid RM200 (approximately S$60) to carry out the harassment. This revelation has raised more questions about who might be behind the attacks and why the family was targeted.

The Johor police have since taken action. In a statement posted on Facebook on February 1, they confirmed the arrest of a 37-year-old man at around 6:10 a.m. on January 31. Kluang district police chief, Assistant Commissioner Bahrin Mohd Noh, stated that the police were alerted to an incident at 5:50 a.m. involving a man who had been attacked with a machete. A team of officers swiftly responded to the scene and apprehended the suspect.

Further investigations revealed that the suspect has a history of criminal and drug-related offenses. According to a report by Sinar Harian, the man tested positive for methamphetamine. The police are now working to locate two other accomplices believed to be involved in the attacks. The suspect has been remanded until February 3 to assist with ongoing investigations.

The incident has left the Fang family shaken and desperate for answers. They are pleading for an end to the harassment and for the authorities to take decisive action to ensure their safety. “We just want to live in peace,” Ms. Fang’s mother said. “This has gone on for too long, and we cannot continue to live in fear.”

The case has sparked concerns among the local community, with many questioning how such brazen acts of harassment could occur during a time traditionally associated with family and celebration. As the investigation continues, the Fang family hopes that justice will be served and that they can finally put this nightmare behind them.
