- Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has indicated he expects Parliament’s standards commissioner to rule against him in an investigation regarding a £5 million gift received from crypto billionaire Christopher Harborne.
- If the standards watchdog finds Mr Farage guilty of a serious breach of rules, he could face a House of Commons suspension of 10 days or more, which would trigger a ‘recall’ petition and potentially a by-election in his Clacton constituency.
- Mr Farage maintains there is “no case to answer”, arguing the funds were accepted prior to his election as an MP in 2024 and were specifically intended to pay for his private security for the rest of his life.
- Parliamentary regulations dictate that newly elected MPs must declare any gifts exceeding £300 received within the previous 12 months, unless the funding cannot reasonably be connected to their political activities.
- The investigation comes alongside wider scrutiny of political financing, as total donations of £72 million to Reform UK from Mr Harborne and fellow crypto billionaire Ben Delo have reignited calls to cap party donations.
