Gujarat has appointed Faridabad-born senior police officer Gyanendra Singh Malik as the state’s new Director General of Police (DGP), marking a proud moment for his hometown. A 1993-batch IPS officer, Malik succeeds KLN Rao, who will continue to head the Crime Investigation Department and prison administration.

An electrical engineering graduate from Banaras Hindu University and a law graduate from Gujarat University, Malik worked with ONGC and Indian Railways before joining the police service. Over his distinguished career, he has served in several districts of Gujarat and held key positions in border security and industrial security forces on Central deputation.

He also served with the UN Peacekeeping Mission in Kosovo, investigating war-crime cases. As Ahmedabad Police Commissioner, he led a major anti-encroachment drive around Chandola Lake. Malik has received the Police Medal for Meritorious Service and the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service.
