Tenom: The Sabah Farmers, Livestock Breeders and Fishermen’s Day (HPPNS) 2026 celebration here achieved its RM1 million sales target, drawing about 30,000 visitors over three days.
State Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry Minister Datuk Jamawi Jaafar said the event boosted the local economy and gave the Ministry a chance to hear directly from farmers, livestock breeders, fishermen and rubber smallholders about their challenges and needs.
He said feedback gathered during the event would be refined through engagement sessions with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security to improve the programme and assistance for target groups.
Speaking at a media conference after officiating the closing of HPPNS 2026 at Padang Pekan Tenom, Monday, he said the livestock auctions drew encouraging responses, including a pair of Australian Brahman Cross cattle that fetched about RM7,700, against a starting price of RM3,300.
An auction of about 16 goats the previous day also performed well, with eight-month-old goats fetching an average of RM1,200, compared with the usual RM800 to RM900.
“The results show the livestock sector has great potential to generate income if managed in a planned and effective way,” he said.
Some traders recorded sales of up to RM30,000, while others made RM25,000, RM15,000 and RM10,000.
Most traders achieved sales of at least RM5,000, he said, showing the potential of the agro-food sector as an income source, particularly for rural communities.
Jamawi said the Ministry would continue to strengthen the agro-food sector and raise the self-sufficiency level for food crops to ensure Sabah’s food security.
About 25,000 visitors were recorded up to the previous day, with another 5,000 to 6,000 on the closing day, he said.
The event’s live broadcast on social media drew an estimated 500,000 to 600,000 views. About 270 stalls took part, involving the Ministry, the Tenom District Council and parties linked to the development of Tenom’s coffee industry.
In a separate event, Jamawi met about 100 participants and officiated the Pekan Tenom Autoshow 2026 at the Tenom Sports Complex.
