A centre for external border asylum procedures is set to open at Berlin Brandenburg Airport to coincide with the introduction of new EU asylum rules.
German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt is among those who have announced a visit to the facility on Friday at 12:45 pm (1045 GMT).
The new centre is intended to process people who request asylum after landing through an accelerated asylum procedure. However, the procedure, which has been agreed at the EU level, applies only to people from countries of origin whose citizens rarely receive protection, those who have provided false information about their identity and people considered a security risk.
External border procedures in Germany only at airports and seaports
Under EU requirements, Germany must provide 374 places nationwide for external border procedures. Further centres exist in Frankfurt and Munich, among other locations, with others in the planning stage.
The reform of the European asylum system agreed at EU level enters into force on Friday.
Border procedures are intended to enable faster asylum decisions and more consistent deportations. People with little prospect of a positive asylum ruling in particular are to go through such an accelerated procedure, which has a maximum duration of 12 weeks.
