After Liu Juan, 30, accumulated debts totalling up to 1 million yuan (RM650,000) from online shopping in just three years, her father in China stabbed her to death.

Liu Juan became addicted to online shopping in 2019. According to SAYS News, the family's credit card had records of her making rash purchases every one to two days.

Her online shopping addiction was serious to such an extent that they would get various bundles consistently, to the point where even before a more established bundle could be opened, another one would show up at their entryway.

Liu Juan discovered she was unable to pay off all of her debts when it came time to repay her online purchases.

Liu Juan, who worked as a security guard with her father, Liu Gang, only made between 3,000 and 4,000 yuan (RM1,952 to RM2,603 per month).

She resorted to her father for help after finding herself unable to pay the money. He was compelled to spend his funds and take a loan from a family member.

Liu Gang became frustrated and requested his family for additional money to pay off his daughter's debts once more.

When the family found out what had transpired between the father and daughter, they increased the amount they had lent him to 20,000 yuan (RM13,018), but it wasn't enough to pay off Liu Juan's obligation.

Liu Gang and his family went out for drinks the day after the incident to solicit further funds.

A relative suggested that his daughter might be working with loan sharks while they were intoxicated. He declared while intoxicated that he and his daughter would die as a result of their debt.

After receiving a 30,000 yuan (RM19, 527) loan from the relative who was with him, Liu Gang left for home.

Liu Gang argued with his daughter over paying off her debt when he got home.

The father killed Liu Juan by stabbing her with a fruit knife during the argument. Following that, he made a call to the police and awaited their arrival at the front door.

The Shanghai No. 2 Intermediate People's Court sentenced Liu Gang to 15 years in prison and four years without the ability to vote after finding him guilty of intentional killing.
