The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) said it was investigating a "threat to Houston stadium circulating online" during the World Cup match between Brazil and Japan on Monday, while stressing there was currently no indication the threat was credible.

"At this time, there is no credibility to the threat," the FBI said in a statement cited by several US media outlets.

The FBI said it was working with local, state and federal security authorities to identify the source of the threat.

"We continue to analyze and assess the situation," it said. "We urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity or individuals to law enforcement immediately."
