A nationwide recall of Spring & Mulberry chocolate bars has widened to include all 12 product varieties after an investigation linked a batch of dates used in production to potential salmonella contamination. Federal regulators said the affected products were sold online and through retail partners across the United States from August 2025 onwards.
The recall expansion follows earlier actions announced in January, when a smaller number of chocolate bars were initially withdrawn. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), no illnesses connected to the products have been reported and all finished products included in the recall have tested negative for salmonella.
The North Carolina-based company, which produces date-sweetened chocolate bars, said the decision was taken after a “comprehensive root cause investigation” carried out with manufacturing partners, food safety specialists and the FDA. According to the company’s statement published by the FDA, a single lot of date ingredients was identified as the “most likely source of contamination”.
Recall Now Covers All 12 Chocolate Flavours
The latest recall expansion adds the Blood Orange, Coffee, Pure Dark and Sea Salt chocolate bars to the original list of affected products. Earlier recalls had already included Mint Leaf, Earl Grey, Lavender Rose, Mango Chili, Mixed Berry, Mulberry Fennel, Pecan Date and Pure Dark Minis.
According to reports, the recalled products were available nationwide through online sales and selected retail stores. Consumers are being advised not to consume any affected bars and to dispose of them immediately.
The FDA listed dozens of affected lot codes printed on both the outer packaging and the inner wrapper. Each recalled product can be identified through a combination of flavour name, lot code and packaging colour. The publication noted that some of the products have remained on sale since at least August 2025, increasing the likelihood that consumers may still have them at home.
Customers seeking refunds have been instructed to email the company with a photograph showing the product packaging and batch code before disposing of the chocolate bars.
FDA Warns Salmonella Infection Can Cause Severe Illness
The FDA said salmonella infection can cause “serious and sometimes fatal infections” in young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals may also experience symptoms including fever, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
According to the agency, more severe cases may allow the infection to spread into the bloodstream, potentially resulting in arterial infections, endocarditis or arthritis. Symptoms generally develop between six hours and six days after exposure and may last between four and seven days.
The company stated that no confirmed illnesses linked to the recalled chocolate bars have been identified. All products included in the expanded recall also tested negative for salmonella contamination, according to the FDA notice.
Spring & Mulberry first issued a voluntary recall in January after routine third-party testing identified possible contamination involving its Mint Leaf Date-Sweetened Chocolate Bar. The subsequent investigation led regulators and company officials to focus on a specific lot of date ingredients used during production.
According to Newsweek, the FDA warned consumers that contaminated food may not appear unusual in smell, taste or appearance, which is why officials urged customers to avoid consuming any of the affected products.
