SANDAKAN: The Federal Cabinet has ordered an immediate and comprehensive review of airport security measures following a recent drug smuggling incident that exposed weaknesses in the system.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail (pic) said the Home Affairs Ministry and the Transport Ministry have been directed to submit a detailed action plan within two weeks.
Speaking to reporters after a joint security assessment with foreign delegations to the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (Esszone), Saifuddin noted that the Cabinet viewed the matter seriously as it had tarnished Malaysia’s image.
He explained that the plan will examine every stage of the security process, including baggage screening, passenger checks, and access controls.
The review will involve key enforcement bodies such as the Royal Malaysia Police, Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad, Aviation Security, and auxiliary police to identify vulnerabilities and prevent future breaches.
