Malaysia is finally getting a PHEV pick-up truck as Feytech will be assembling the JAC T9 in Kedah.

The JAC T9 will be locally-assembled in Kulim, Kedah by Feytech. Feytech is a Malaysian public listed investment holding company that’s heavily involved in automotive industry. They own Gosford Leather Industries, a major auto parts manufacturer as well as other companies involved in seat and covers. They’re now stepping into the CKD assembly game with a new subsidiary called FT Assembly. A new 84,000 square foot JAC assembly facility has been constructed to facilitate the assembly of the JAC T9, one of the first all-electric pick-up trucks offered to the public in Malaysia. We tried one last year and were surprised by what it could deliver.

The JAC T9 was initially offered in full-spec diesel and a cut spec electric variants. However, it’s the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) variant that will be the first in line for local assembly at the new FT Assembly plant. If they hit their intended November 2026 start date, it could be followed closely by the diesel and electric versions by January 2027. Feytech says they intend to hit a 30% local content target for the T9.

Feytech’s commitment to local assembly has so far hit RM3.6 million and they’re prepared to expand it to RM8 million over the next three years. In its first year, Feytech can assemble 3,000 pick-up trucks in its first year. In 2025, the Malaysian market consumed 45,000 pick-up trucks. Assuming 2027 stay around that ball park, it would represent about 7% of the market, which only consists of a handful of products – the Hilux, the D-Max, the Triton, the Ranger, and the Navara.

Other pick-up truck brands are being effectively stopped by MITI from entering the market without a CKD program. It’ll be very interesting to see how the market reacts to such a unique proposition as diesel prices fluctuate on the free market.
