I needed twelve photos. Not eleven, twelve. That's how many the big brass camera takes per roll, how many clicks No.2 makes, and how many hamlets were inside Kampung Kranji, Sungei Kadut, Lorong Fatimah. Twelve small villages inside three names.

I sat in the back room above Tekka Centre. The fan wasn't clacking anymore. After I printed the 114 families, it became steady. Sam said that's what happens when something gets resolved. My white Toyota SJB 2847Y was under the mango tree where the blue car used to be. Same number plate as the blue Datsun from 1975. Same plate, different years.

I wrote a list in my notebook: twelve photos, all indirect, because direct makes roads loop and phones die and cars not start. 1 puddle at Kampung Kranji dam edge, 2 shadow on NUS Arch at 2:22, 3 side mirror of my Toyota at Kampung Sungei Kadut, 4 rearview mirror where my mother sat since 1975, 5 black laptop screen showing Padang at City Hall, 6 bathroom mirror at Tekka where I saw three mothers, 7 headlight of my Toyota where two faces show — me and Big, 8 ground glass photographing itself, 9 Suresh's school bag texture at 14 Armenian Street, 10 red NUS album page with Datsun at Kent Ridge, 11 registration card reflected in brass, 12 self-portrait in darkroom mirror with all Nuvishas behind.

I went out May 19 to collect them. A man in a black Alza followed me. Son of the man who built the dam at Kranji in 1975. Now he owns the land where villages were, wants to build condos at Lim Chu Kang. Wants my Ubin cottage gone, wants 14 Armenian Street shop gone, wants my Toyota gone. He said I'm squatting, documenting haunted nonsense same as my mother was told nonsense. I said villages aren't haunted, they are just files never closed, people told to leave and never paid. I'm not documenting, I'm restoring. He tried to grab No.2, same as they took my mother's film in 1975. No.2 clicked on its own, one soft click saying no, like when I found album in rain. In its ground glass he saw his own father in 1975 at Kranji dam site holding notice. He let go.

Chapter 12 — The Last Shutter — Night Shoot — Kranji.

Night shoot. Singapore night is usually orange from HDB sodium lights, but Kranji Reservoir dam edge at night is dark because reservoir water swallows light. I set up all my cameras on tripods. The big EST. 1936 brass camera that breathes, the small No.2 that clicks alone when it agrees, my laptop with black screen as viewfinder, my white Toyota headlights on to light the place that was erased.

I put them at the dam edge, all set to perfect light — not too bright like Chapter 8 when I was too sensitive and roads looped, not too dark, just right. Everyone gathered. Suresh with his bag, my mother at 21 and 67, Nuvisha Big, Lili, 114 families children, Sam 17 and Sam now, Mr. Lim who people stopped seeing after he photographed something that didn't want to be photographed but who brought big camera to NUS in 1975, even developer's son in black Alza far away scared.

I clicked. Three clicks on big camera, three clicks on No.2, Enter on laptop. Same thump like a book closing. At that click Toyota battery died, lights out. No Toyota lights now, only moon. And then I was alone in 1975. Village alive before dam. Houses, rubber tapping lines, smoke, new shiny kettle where rusted one was. Datsun blue SJB 2847Y new headlights on, Toyota white not exist yet but same plate. All echoes now alive because in 1975 they weren't echoes yet.

Chapter 13 — Contact Sheet — 10 Minutes — Kranji.

Ten minutes. That's all I had with her. No science explanation, no portal talk, just two women who share a name and love seeing what others miss.

I walked barefoot because my shoes were in dead Toyota. Earth 1975 not concrete 2026, smell rubber and wood smoke. At edge near angsana tree at Kranji, my mother at 22 alive passionate scared. Not 67 who packs photos high up, not voice on phone who hangs up, but 22 blue salwar bindi crooked gold jhumka holding lantern. Next to her Suresh 7 bowl cut barefoot holding lantern with his bag — if lost return to 14 Armenian Street, Singapore.

She looked at me — you have my bindi, my jhumka, my camera, my plate SJB 2847Y? I said I have your plate same plate Datsun and Toyota same echo, your camera EST. 1936 and No.2, your red NUS album, your banner. She said you are my echo? I said I'm your reprint. You kept photos high up because scared, I keep at eye level open. You called 8:14 every night but hung up because you love me that's why you hang up, I stayed. You photographed protest and were silenced, I made 114 reprints one per family to restore.

She laughed, same laugh I have when puddle shows village clear. She said we have ten minutes because 2:22 is when Big disappeared at arch trying to photograph place erased, time of protest, time of dam notice, time of shutter between. I asked why silenced? She said because I photographed place erased, villages not haunted but file never closed 114 families never paid, I photographed with EST. 1936 Mr. Lim taught it remembers even when film taken ground glass remembers.

I said I made 12 photos composite to make village visible in one image, night shoot all cameras echoes gather battery dies alone in 1975. She listened and said Don't prove them.

Free them. Don't try to prove to NUS professors who said nonsense, don't prove to SLA officer, don't prove to developer's son with bulldozer tomorrow. Free them — free 114 families via reprint, free Big, free Suresh, free yourself who was in Toa Payoh flat at 3 a.m. and back room above Tekka at 3 a.m. staring at ground glass that showed things that hadn't happened yet.

A contact sheet in photography is twelve small prints on one sheet to see which to enlarge. Mother gave me contact sheet — twelve small images — mother at rubber tree, Big at arch, Lili, Datsun, Toyota same plate, Suresh bag, red album, registration card. Keep at eye level.

Chapter 14 — The Cost Of Light.

I came back to 2026. No explanation how, just shutter between — between Datsun and Toyota same plate, between 1975 and 2026, between Toa Payoh and Tekka back room humid sandalwood. May 20 morning, Toyota battery still dead lights out tripods fallen at dam edge, Datsun headlights still on lighting village 1975 but now 2026 reservoir water again village erased again.

My composite worked — one image that shows lost village visible with all its people — 114 families children mother Big Lili, Suresh, Sam, Mr. Lim, Datsun and Toyota same plate dam behind village in front. But my tools were wiped. I opened laptop in back room above Tekka 9:22 a.m., folder empty — no model, no composite file, no echo photos. My whisper box melted, brass warm but adapter burnt. Sensor burnt.

I lost the tool but kept the vision. I lose: code wiped, adapter burnt, Toyota dead, bulldozer scheduled tomorrow for Ubin cottage, fellowship jury says manipulated. I keep: seeing village not dam, children not empty Padang, mother 22 not 62, Big not disappeared, Suresh bag, banner WE ARE NOT DATA THAT CAN BE ERASED, plate SJB 2847Y same echo.

I submitted not twelve photos but one — restored village with its entire people. Fellowship jury at National Gallery Singapore in fancy room said this is composite not single exposure, manipulated, AI generated, not photography. I said villages aren't haunted they are file never closed, I made 114 reprints took to SLA reopened File 75/214, made 12 echo photos composite, set up night shoot echoes gather battery dies alone in 1975, met mother 22 ten minutes no science two women share name love for seeing, mother said don't prove them free them. Jury said manipulated. I said cost of light is tool not vision. I lost fellowship.

Chapter 15 — Print — Yishun / Khatib.

Months later, Yishun. Not Toa Payoh, not Kent Ridge, not London winter coats snow. Small community gallery near home in Khatib where I live now. Not fellowship jury room. One print only. Not 114 reprints one per family, not twelve echo photos grid, not night shoot tripods, not contact sheet twelve small, not submission one. One print — watercolor of cottage from Chapter 1 Pulau Ubin blue car cottage where album left for echo to find during rain, cottage that developer's son wanted gone bulldozer tomorrow.

In watercolor, when people look close they see faint faces in cottage windows. Mother 21 blue salwar bindi crooked holding banner, Big round glasses, Lili afro FEELING GROOVY, Suresh 7 bag barefoot Akka help me, 114 families children white shirts blue pinafores, Sam 17 fixing cameras, Mr. Lim existing, Datsun blue and Honda white same plate headlights on — now both SJB 2847Y.

People come, white walls eye level not high cupboard like Toa Payoh photos mother packed high, eye level open like darkroom wall, like 114 reprints drying eye level, like final roll 116 prints pinning wall. They whisper looking close. My mother attends. She sees her younger self for first time in 51 years. My mother 67 from Toa Payoh who packed photos high, who called 8:14 every night and hung up because loves you that's why hangs up, who pinned print eye level first time, who hugged first hug since blue car, who gave contact sheet at angsana tree at Kranji.

Last line: I finally don't look through the lens. I just look. Because small camera had no battery no slot brass wood bellows ground glass that should have shown upside-down image but instead showed things that hadn't happened yet, I always looked through ground glass upside down brighter full children, puddle indirect shadow indirect side mirror rearview black screen bathroom three mothers headlight two faces ground glass recursive bag photogram album card darkroom mirror. All indirect all through lens puddle mirror black screen. Now final: I finally don't look through lens. I just look at mother seeing younger self, at cottage windows faint faces, at one print watercolor at small gallery Yishun eye level open at plate SJB 2847Y same plate same echo outside gallery Datsun and Toyota both same plate same restore same record keeper. Just eyes same love for seeing what others miss same as mother 22 and me. I just look.
