Gianni Infantino reveals Donald Trump stance on Iran World Cup participation

FIFA Media shared details from Infantino’s meeting with Donald Trump as preparations continue for the 2026 tournament.

“This evening, I met with the President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, to discuss the status of preparations for the upcoming FIFA World Cup, and the growing excitement as we are set to kick off in just 93 days,” Infantino said.

He added: “We also spoke about the current situation in Iran, and the fact that the Iranian team has qualified to participate in the FIFA World Cup 2026.

“During the discussions, President Trump reiterated that the Iranian team is, of course, welcome to compete in the tournament in the United States.”

The comments suggest that political tensions will not prevent Iran from participating in the tournament. Iran qualified for the competition through the Asian Football Confederation qualifying campaign.

Gianni Infantino says the World Cup should unite people

Infantino also emphasized the importance of the World Cup as a global event capable of bringing nations together.

“We all need an event like the FIFA World Cup to bring people together now more than ever, and I sincerely thank the President of the United States for his support, as it shows once again that Football Unites the World,” the FIFA president concluded.

The 2026 tournament will be the first World Cup featuring 48 teams.

With matches taking place across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, it is expected to become the largest edition of the competition in FIFA history.

Iran’s participation will therefore form part of a tournament designed to showcase football on a truly global scale.
