Fifa reaches verdict on Palestine flags at World Cup – as old Iranian flag banned

  • Fifa is reportedly planning to prohibit fans from bringing the pre-revolutionary Iranian flag into stadiums during the upcoming World Cup in the United States, a ruling previously applied at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
  • The pre-revolutionary flag, featuring a lion and sun, is widely used by Iranians in the US and globally as a symbol of protest against the current Iranian regime, distinguishing it from the official flag adopted after the 1979 revolution.
  • The ban aligns with Fifa's Stadium Code of Conduct, which prohibits materials of a political, offensive, or discriminatory nature, including flags and other paraphernalia.
  • In contrast to the Iranian pre-revolutionary flag, Fifa is expected to permit the Palestine flag, according to The Athletic, as it is the officially approved flag of a Fifa member association.
  • Iran are scheduled to compete in the tournament, with group-stage matches set for Los Angeles and Seattle, and over 50,000 tickets for their opening clash against New Zealand have been sold.
