Newcastle United ace Sandro Tonali has been guaranteed support from the Italian Football Federation.

The 23-year-old has admitted to having a gambling addiction, which his agent confirmed this week.

Tonali, who is the subject of a probe into illegal betting in Italy, may be in hot water with the authorities.

"My thoughts come from a human point of view," Italian Football Federation president Gabriele Gravina said in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport.

"These boys are like children to me and they cannot be hung out to dry, which is how the situation is unfolding.

In Italy it is a disease. Gambling addiction is a social plague, not solely confined to Italian football. There are 5.1 million people who play and 1.5 million are suffering. It is unsurprising that some of them are also involved in football.

"But, we won't hold back. We don't just want to condemn, those who make mistakes will be punished, with the utmost speed and clarity. All those who ask for help will have it: the FIGC must not only punish, but help with the healing process."
