Filipino students take AI warehouse drone concepts to Asia-Pacific challenge

FILIPINO students are exploring how artificial intelligence, autonomous drones, computer vision and advanced sensors could change warehouse operations as e-commerce drives demand for faster and more accurate logistics systems.

Three student teams selected to represent the Philippines at the 2026 FedEx/Junior Achievement International Trade Challenge have proposed AI-powered autonomous warehouse drone systems for Vietnam's growing e-commerce and logistics sector.

The six students will take their concepts to the Asia-Pacific regional finals in Singapore in August, where they will compete and collaborate with students from Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

This year's challenge asked students to develop a market entry strategy for AI-powered warehouse drones intended to improve inventory accuracy and speed up fulfillment in Vietnam. While the competition focused on entrepreneurship and international trade, the resulting proposals brought together technologies increasingly being applied to warehouse automation, including computer vision, radio-frequency identification, LiDAR, autonomous navigation, environmental sensing, cloud computing and AI.

One of the Philippine finalists, ArkSight, was developed by Matthew John Hife and Lorente Jr. Berden of Mandaue City Comprehensive National High School.

Their proposed autonomous inventory drone combines computer vision and ultra-high frequency radio-frequency identification, or UHF RFID, with autonomous navigation and cloud analytics.

Computer vision would allow the system to recognize and process visual information inside a warehouse, while RFID could identify tagged inventory without requiring the drone to read individual barcodes. Autonomous navigation would allow the aircraft to move through warehouse aisles with limited human intervention, with information collected during its flights processed through a cloud-based platform.

The students designed ArkSight for small and medium-sized logistics operations and proposed offering the technology through a Drone-as-a-Service model rather than requiring companies to make large upfront investments in robotic equipment.

A second team from the University of San Jose-Recoletos developed Chuôn Chuôn, an AI-based inventory management concept combining autonomous drones, wireless charging, real-time warehouse monitoring and conversational AI.

Students Minette Cabaluna and Jim Niño Gonzales proposed Chuôn2Bot, a Vietnamese-language AI assistant that would work with the system. The concept adds a natural-language interface to warehouse automation, potentially allowing personnel to interact with inventory information through conversational queries.

The team also proposed a subscription-based Drone-as-a-Service model, supported by pilot deployments and localized customer support, as a way of making warehouse automation more accessible.

The third concept, Altius AI, focuses on the more specialized requirements of cold-chain warehouses.

Developed by Mico Alfonso Aviñante Nolledo and Nathan Trono Dy Pico of Everest International Academy, Altius AI combines autonomous inventory tracking with environmental monitoring, LiDAR mapping, warehouse management system integration and AI-based irregularity detection.

Cold-chain facilities present a different problem for autonomous systems because inventory must be managed alongside environmental conditions. The students' concept would use the drone not only to locate and track goods but also to monitor factors such as temperature and humidity.

LiDAR, which determines distance using laser pulses, can provide detailed spatial information for mapping and navigation. Combined with other sensors and AI analysis, the technology could allow a drone to operate as a mobile data collection platform inside a warehouse rather than simply as an airborne scanner.

The three concepts illustrate the changing role envisioned for drones in industrial environments. Instead of using an aircraft only to capture images or scan inventory, warehouse drones can potentially combine multiple sensors with AI and software systems to collect, analyze and relay information as they move through a facility.

The competition does not necessarily mean the proposed systems are commercially deployable technologies. The FedEx/JA challenge requires participants to develop market entry strategies, placing the emphasis on applying technology to a business problem while considering costs, customers and market conditions.

That combination of technology and commercialization is central to the International Trade Challenge, which FedEx runs in collaboration with Junior Achievement.

Now in its 17th year in the Philippines, the program gives secondary school students exposure to international trade and entrepreneurship through workshops and team challenges. FedEx said more than 12,000 students in the country have participated in the program since 2009.

"The future of innovation depends on giving young people the opportunity to learn, collaborate, and think big," FedEx Philippines Managing Director Maribeth Espinosa said.

Espinosa said the return of an in-person workshop alongside virtual participation allowed the program to reach aspiring entrepreneurs from different parts of the country.

"Through the FedEx/JA International Trade Challenge, we hope to equip Filipino youth with the confidence, global perspective, and problem-solving skills they need to turn bold ideas into meaningful business solutions," she said.

Filipino students have recorded several strong finishes in the regional competition, including first-place finishes in 2020 and 2021 and second-place finishes in 2021, 2024 and 2025. This means that in the Singapore competition the students will have to show how emerging technologies can be translated into practical products and services for another country's market.
