Kota Kinabalu: An 18-year-old Filipino who brutally caused hurt to a woman while robbery her during daylight, was sentenced to eight years and ordered to get a stroke of the cane.

Sessions Court Judge Elsie Primus handed the sentence to Kalang Uluhati who maintained hi plea of guilty when his case was brought up for facts and sentencing.

Kalang had punched and hit the 35-year-old woman’s head while robbing her at 12.30pm on Feb 15 near the One Stop Premium building at Jalan Hj Saman, here.

During the incident, he made off several items, including, a MyKad, two MyKids, two bank cards, driving licence, a dental card and RM50.

Kalang in his mitigation, begged for a light sentence.

However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Siti Hajar Mazlan urged the court to impose a heavy sentence on the grounds that the victim was suffered injuries in the incident.

The court heard that while the victim was walking alone towards her workplace, an unknown man followed her from behind but she did not suspect anything.

Suddenly, the man later, identified as Kalang, assaulted her by covering her mouth, punched and also hit her until she was bleeding on her face due to the assault.

Kalang then ran away with the victim’s belongings.

The woman suffered injuries on her face, head and hands and received treatment at the hospital.

CCTV at the area showed the woman bleeding and the video went viral.

Kalang was arrested following the discovery of the woman’s belongings.
