TWO Filipino maritime students have secured the top spots in the prestigious 2025 Lüddeke Prize, an international award organized by The Nautical Institute to recognize excellence and leadership among the next generation of seafarers.
John Emmanuel Espiritu, a cadet from the Maritime Academy of Asia and the Pacific (MAAP) and the International Maritime Employers’ Council (IMEC), was named the overall winner of the prize. Danny Christian Jumayao of the John B. Lacson Colleges Foundation (JBLCF) was named joint runner-up alongside Cadet MD Mehedi Hasan of the Bangladesh Maritime University.
The Nautical Institute said that having two of the three global winners hail from the Philippines underscores the country’s status as the “seafaring capital of the world.” This is held annually in memory of Capt. Christof Ferdinand Lüddeke, a master mariner and legal expert known for his commitment to professional integrity and maritime education.
“This recognition is not just a personal achievement, but a reflection of the lessons, values, and standards set by the Maritime Academy of Asia and the Pacific in shaping cadets to become world-class seafarers,” Espiritu said. He noted that the award contributes to the Philippines’ “growing credibility in the global maritime industry.”
Runner-up Danny Christian Jumayao encouraged his fellow Filipino youth to persevere in their training. “A dream only becomes impossible the moment we stop chasing it,” Jumayao said, describing the award as a significant milestone as he nears the end of his academic journey.
Capt. John Lloyd FNI, CEO of The Nautical Institute, congratulated the winners for their contributions to operational safety and leadership. “The Lüddeke Prize highlights the important role of knowledge and leadership in shaping the future of maritime operations,” Lloyd said.
Beyond individual recognition, the award provides substantial resources to the winners’ respective schools to further maritime education.
Cadet Espiritu received £250 in vouchers while MAAP was awarded £1,000 worth of technical maritime books.
Runner-up Jumayao received £100 in vouchers and JBLCF was awarded £500 worth of technical maritime books.
The awards emphasize the Nautical Institute’s ongoing mission to promote best practices and safety across the global maritime community by supporting the professional development of future officers.
