MANILA, Philippines — Actress Jorrybell Agoto, one of the stars of the Philippines’ Oscar entry “Filipiñana,” is seeking financial and public support as she undergoes critical care while battling cancer.
The appeal was shared by the film’s official social media account on Thursday, which called on supporters to help Agoto amid mounting medical expenses.
According to the post, Agoto is currently in the Critical Care Unit at St. Luke’s Hospital, where doctors are managing fluid in her lungs to help her breathe.
“Our beloved Jorrybell is bravely fighting cancer in the ICU at St. Luke’s Hospital. The mounting medical bills for her life-saving treatments have become overwhelming, and we are asking for your help to give her the strength to keep fighting,” the post read.
The appeal asked the public for financial assistance, shares and prayers as Agoto continues her treatment.
Those who wish to provide financial assistance may send donations through UnionBank or GoTyme Bank under the name Jorrybell Agoto. The complete account details and donation information were included in the film’s social media appeal.
The appeal comes shortly after “Filipiñana,” directed by Rafael Manuel, was selected as the Philippines’ official entry for the Best International Feature Film category of the 99th Academy Awards.
Agoto plays one of the lead roles in the film, which follows 17-year-old Isabel, a young woman from rural Ilocos who works as a “tee girl” at an elite country club.
The film explores class, power, labor and social inequality through the enclosed world of the country club and the relationship between Isabel and its president, Dr. Palanca.
“Filipiñana” premiered at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival, where it received the World Cinema Dramatic Special Jury Award for Creative Vision. It later screened at the 76th Berlin International Film Festival and received awards at the San Francisco International Film Festival, Independent Film Festival of Boston and Cinema Jove International Film Festival.
The film also stars Carmen Castellanos, Teroy Guzman, Carlitos Siguion-Reyna, Isabel Sicat and Nour Houshmand.
The Film Academy of the Philippines said it will support “Filipiñana” in its Oscars campaign as it seeks consideration in the Best International Feature Film category.
The 99th Academy Awards are scheduled for March 14, 2027, in Los Angeles.
