Kota Kinabalu: Local art industry players, especially those filming in Sabah and Sarawak, are reminded to first obtain a permit from their respective state government agencies.

Director of the Malaysian National Film Development Corporation (Finas) Borneo, Mohammad Rizal Mohamed Yunus, said although a production company has a licence issued by Finas, they are also subject to the rules set by the states.

“A Finas licence is required to carry out filming, but when entering Sabah, they need to obtain a permit from the State Government to ensure that every filming is controlled, especially in areas where a permit is required,” he told reporters in conjunction with the Kupi-Kupi Borneo 2023 programme, here, Thursday.

Mohammad Rizal said the decision by the State Government was to control the content of films, especially when filming takes place in tourist areas.

In the meantime, Mohammad Rizal said Finas has also extended the deadline for production houses with Enterprise status to upgrade to Sdn Bhd companies to Dec 31 this year.

The extension, he said, was to give ample time to the parties involved to obtain capital of RM50,000 as the condition for obtaining a Finas licence.

On the Kupi Kupi Borneo programme, he said it aims to provide a platform for creative industry players in Sabah to share their experiences and exchange opinions.
