- Dated 10 April 1912 and postmarked Queenstown, the letter was addressed to a friend and described the fine weather and good atmosphere on board the ship.
- Mr Hodges, who boarded in Southampton, detailed various passenger activities, including marching, singing, and “playing dominoes & cards in the saloons”.
- Mr Hodges died five days later when the Titanic sank on 15 April 1912, an event that claimed 1,500 lives.
- Auctioneer Andrew Aldridge emphasised the letter's historical significance, saying that it provides a unique snapshot into the life of a second-class passenger on the ill-fated liner.
