At long last, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has conferred a Lifetime Award under the IBR Global Maritime and Aerospace Awards 2023.
The award honours an individual who is dedicated towards promoting the aerospace and maritime industries to greater heights for the benefit of Malaysia and its people.
This is the first time a lifetime award has been conferred on anybody at the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace exhibition 2023 (Lima ‘23) and it is indeed timely considering that Tun Mahathir is already close to 100 and has done so much for the island and the event.
Lima, held for the very first time in 1991, is the brainchild of Dr. Mahatir who has always dreamed of promoting Langkawi and the industry to the rest of the world.
At the award ceremony, Tun said, "I believe that Lima will carry on and hope that the Malaysian government will continue organizing this biennial event."
He is quoted as saying that the maritime and aerospace industries are developing well and Lima would give exhibitors the opportunity to promote their products.
Lima is an ideal platform for local players to showcase their innovations to the world, provided that successive governments would not decide to scrap it. We say this as a caution to those who will govern the country next. Sometimes, in an attempt to discredit a predecessor, a new administration may discontinue a great idea like Lima.
We would caution such individuals not to scrap an idea just because you do not like the initiator.
In addition, according to Tun Mahathir, Lima helps boost the country’s tourism sector as it brings foreign delegates to Malaysia in droves to fill up hotels and motels that now line the lovely beaches of the island.
It is his vision that has successfully turned a once sleepy magical island paradise cursed by the legendary Mahsuri for seven generations into what it is today.
We see the award is not just for his idea about promoting aerospace and maritime industries but more for developing a backwater into a tourist destination. Tun Mahathir's dream is now a reality.
Well done, Tun Mahathir. You deserve this lifetime achievement award!
