KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 14 — Young people aged 30 and below recorded 65.9 million Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) transactions worth RM5.4 billion in the first half of 2026, accounting for 37.9 per cent of total BNPL transactions in Malaysia, according to the Ministry of Finance (MoF).

In a written reply published on the parliament website yesterday, the MoF said the total number of BNPL transactions in Malaysia during that period was 173.9 million, valued at RM14.7 billion, with youths contributing 36.7 per cent of the total transaction value.

As of June 30, 2026, the outstanding BNPL financing balance for this demographic stood at RM2.4 billion, while non-performing financing amounted to RM96.8 million, or 4.0 per cent of the outstanding balance.

The MoF was replying to a question from Datuk Dr Alias Razak (Kuala Nerus-PN) regarding measures taken by the Consumer Credit Commission to protect young people from excessive indebtedness through BNPL schemes, including the comprehensive assessment of consumers’ credit commitments. — Bernama
