Fined RM50,000 over 10 illegals

Kota Kinabalu: A 39-year-old man was fined a total of RM50,000 for allowing 10 illegal immigrants to stay in his premises.

Sessions Court Judge Azreena Aziz meted out the sentence to Williamson Jisrail Justus after he pleaded guilty, Monday.

Williamson was found permitting the illegal immigrants comprising six Indonesians and four Filipinos, aged between 18 and 41, who did not have any documents, to be in the premises at 12.25am on June 8 at the Tribes Club in Lok Kawi, Papar.

The offence under Section 55E(2) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 which carries a jail term of up to a year, or a fine of between RM5,000 and RM30,000, or both, for each illegal immigrant involved.

Williamson was ordered to pay the first payment of RM10,000, second payment of RM20,000 on or before Oct 31 and the third payment of RM20,000 on or before Nov

30 which also fixed for review for the payment.

During mitigation, Williamson asked for leniency as he had pleaded guilty to the charge and applied for the fine to be paid by instalment.

However, Prosecuting Officer Abu Sopian from the Immigration Department urged the court to impose an appropriate sentence as to give a lesson not only to Williamson but public at large.
