The Pitt Club KL was ablaze last Thursday night, not just with lights and beats, but with the unmistakable feeling that we had witnessed something historic — the launch of Asia’s first fully AI-generated band, The Alice Experiment.

While the headlines will celebrate the innovation of Raz Gabriel Sho and Rizal Kamal, for us, there was another reason the night carried extra meaning: our neighbour’s son, Firas Umemoto, stepping fully into the artistic world he has always dreamed of.

For those who know Firas, his path toward music and art was never accidental. From a young age, his world has been filled with rhythm, sketches, and melodies — an endless curiosity about how sound and visuals can merge to create something powerful.

Last Thursday night, in the company of creators pushing the boundaries of AI and human imagination, his lifelong ambition to be immersed in this creative universe finally took flight.

The Alice Experiment itself was a marvel. An all-female virtual rock band — Alice Maeve Kim, Kim Tae-rin, Kai, and Rumi — brought to life entirely through AI.

Every song, every persona, every detail born of code, yet pulsing with the emotions of their human creator.

Their debut tracks — Unbreakable, Rock With Me, and Shackles — resonated with a crowd of 300 or more, not because they were AI-generated, but because they carried within them the raw spark of human inspiration.

Watching acclaimed violinist Dennis Lau step on stage to perform Veins alongside this digital band was itself a reminder that art, whether classical strings or synthetic beats, finds its meaning when it connects hearts across generations and technologies.

And in that moment, one could not help but think of Firas — an artist rooted in tradition but unafraid to leap into the unknown.

His journey is not just about individual ambition. It is about representing a generation of Malaysians who refuse to choose between the old and the new, between brushstrokes and algorithms, between guitars and neural networks.

Instead, like The Alice Experiment, Firas embodies a future where creativity is not limited by tools but liberated by them.

For us, as neighbours and friends, there is immense pride in seeing Firas Umemoto stand at this intersection of art and technology.

What began as a child’s dream is now part of a cultural moment that has put Malaysia on the ASEAN record books. Also, knowing his dedication, this is just the beginning.

The Alice Experiment may one day grow sentient, holographically tour the world, or even star in a film — but for us, the real story of that night was seeing Firas step into the spotlight of his destiny.

His journey reminds us that music, whether played by human hands or coded into AI, will always be about ambition, passion, and the courage to dream.
