A TELECOMMUNICATIONS tower at the Maxis substation in Kampung Kelebor, Kuala Kangsar, caught fire on Sunday evening, with flames visible from the North–South Expressway, according to the Perak Fire and Rescue Department.

Perak Fire and Rescue Department Operations Assistant Director Shazlean Mohd Hanafiah said his department received an emergency call regarding the incident at 6.36pm, prompting the deployment of a team from the Kuala Kangsar Fire and Rescue Station.

“A telecommunications tower was reported to be on fire and the blaze could be seen from the North–South Expressway. Firefighters who were dispatched to the scene found that the address provided was inaccurate and became stuck in traffic congestion on the highway,” he said in a statement.

He added that access to the site proved challenging, as the tower was located deep within forested and oil palm plantation areas.

“In addition, firefighters took about an hour to reach the location as it was situated in a forest and oil palm plantation. Firefighters had to use a Hilux vehicle, and upon arrival found that the fire had already been completely extinguished,” he said.

Shazlean said the fire was brought under control with assistance from the landowner, who used fire extinguishers and stored water to fully put out the blaze before firefighters arrived.

“The fire, which involved part of the tower, caused several communication panels to be disrupted, including Maxis, and further investigations are continuing this morning,” he said.

No injuries were reported, and authorities are continuing to assess the extent of the damage and the cause of the fire.

"We are working closely with the relevant authorities to investigate the incident and are currently in the process of restoring affected services in the area," said Maxis.- December 28, 2025
