Kota Kinabalu: Six terrace houses in Sunny Garden along Jalan Tuaran were damaged in an afternoon fire on Saturday.

A spokesperson for the Sabah Fire and Rescue Department (FRD) Operations Centre said four houses in Lorong 5 were 50 per cent damaged, one 20 per cent and another at 90. The worst-hit belongs to an 80-year-old individual who wished to be known only as Teo. He was a former City Hall head of department.

“I was watching television in the living room when I noticed smoke coming from a room in the back.

“I have been living in this three-bedroom house for 60 years with my wife and daughter,” he told Daily Express at the scene.

Meanwhile, one of the 24 firefighters from the Kota Kinabalu Station dispatched to the location fell from a rooftop while battling the flames.

“Forty-three-year-old Azrin Amin did not sustain injuries but was sent to the hospital for examination,” said a FRD spokesperson. The fire is believed to be caused by an electrical short circuit.
