SANDAKAN: Kampung Sim-Sim water village residents are encouraged to keep at least one fire extinguishers on hand.

“Fire extinguishers are very useful in controlling small fires from spreading,” said SAPP Deputy Chairman cum Tanjung Papat Central Liaison Committee (CLC) Chairman Kapitan Thomas Lau.

AdvertisementThomas who is also Persatuan Media Sandakan (PEMASSA) Advisor said fire extinguishers are particularly important in water village settlements, where fires can spread rapidly and cause extensive damage.

The recommendation followed a Feb 4 incident at Jambatan 22 Kampung Sim-Sim, where a fire broke out in the home of Daily Express journalist Mardinah Jikur, who is also PEMASSA Secretary.

The fire was brought under control before firefighters arrived with two engines and 14 personnel to the scene.

AdvertisementAll 12 residents of the house, including Mardinah’s elderly parents, seven adults and three children, escaped unharmed.

Following the incident, SAPP has committed to helping the family with repair costs to restore the damaged area and enable Mardinah’s father and brother to resume their grocery store operations.

AdvertisementDuring a visit to the affected family, representatives from both CLC and PEMASSA were present, including Committee Member Lo Wai Chuen, PEMASSA Chairman James Leong, Deputy Chairman Fauzi R Lahap and Treasurer Winnie Kasmir.

Welfare assistance was also provided by PEMASSA to the family, for which Mardinah expressed gratitude on behalf of her family.
