A fire has broken out on a tanker off Oman, the UK's Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said on Thursday, citing local authorities.

The incident was recorded north-east of the port city of Sohar.

"Local authorities have reported a tanker has experienced a fire in the engine room. No environmental impact has been reported," UKMTO said in an advisory shared on X.

A number of vessels have been attacked in the Strait of Hormuz between Iran and Oman since the United States and Israel began their war on Iran on February 28.

Iran responded by threatening and attacking ships looking to transit the waterway, effectively shutting down a key route for global energy exports and sending energy prices soaring.

The US then imposed a blockade on Iranian ports, aimed at disrupting the country's oil trade, which is key for its economy.

As part of the blockade, the US military has repeatedly fired at vessels, rendering them unable to manoeuvre.
