The Selangor Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) reported a significant rise in fire incidents, totaling 7,350 cases in the state last year, including the unfortunate airplane crash incident near Elmina. This marked a notable increase compared to the 6,294 cases recorded in 2022. Wan Md Razali Wan Ismail, the director of JBPM, highlighted that while incidents resulting in loss of life had shown a declining trend from 2019 to 2021, with fatalities dropping from 32 to 16, last year witnessed a concerning upswing, resulting in 21 lives lost.
Addressing the media during the launch of the Fire Safety Campaign ahead of the Chinese New Year celebration, Wan Md Razali emphasized the commitment of JBPM personnel during the festive season. Approximately 1,120 out of nearly 1,600 members will be on duty, with only 30% permitted to go on leave. The department ensures that at least 470 members and officers are on duty every day to enhance public safety.
Highlighting a crucial concern, Wan Md Razali disclosed that nearly 50% of buildings categorized as designated structures under the Fire Services Act 1988 (Act 341) in Selangor lack a fire certificate (FC). Out of 1,844 designated premises, only 980 had obtained the necessary certification by 2023, falling short of the mandated number. In the same period, the Selangor JBPM received 1,239 applications, with 1,036 undergoing checks and 997 in the process of FC issuance upon meeting fire safety requirements.
Wan Md Razali underscored the department's commitment to enforcing fire safety regulations by revealing that charges were filed against 99 premises owners for non-compliance last year. Violations included blocking safety exit routes, malfunctioning pump systems, issues with emergency lights, unauthorized modifications to designated premises without fire department approval, and other similar infringements. The department remains vigilant in its efforts to enhance fire safety awareness and ensure compliance with regulations to protect lives and property in the region.
