PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has ordered authorities to conduct an immediate, thorough and transparent investigation into the death of a 16-year-old girl who was found at a school in Yong Peng, Johor.
In a Facebook post, Anwar said he was deeply saddened by the death and extended his condolences to the family and next of kin of the student.
“I have asked the authorities to conduct an immediate, thorough and transparent investigation to identify the cause and what actually happened. If there are elements of crime, firm action must be taken according to the law,” he said.
Anwar also stressed that the safety of children was a shared responsibility, adding that the Government would not compromise on ensuring their safety and wellbeing.
The student, identified as Irene Sofiya Mohd Khairool Faisal, was found dead in a hall at her secondary school in Yong Peng at about 5.30pm on Saturday.
Three male students, all aged 16 and from the same school, were subsequently detained several hours after the discovery of the girl’s body for their alleged involvement in the case.
Irene was believed to have gone to the school in the afternoon to attend extra classes.
Her grandmother later went to the school after realising that the teenager had not returned home and found her lying in the school hall.
According to a source, the girl was initially still conscious when found but later lost consciousness. She was also said to have sustained bruising and had dried blood on her body.
The teenager was reportedly an orphan who lived with her grandmother in the district following the death of her mother, while her father works in Kuala Lumpur.
Police investigations are ongoing.
