Kota Kinabalu: The Clinical Research Unit and Geriatric Unit of Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Sabah Alzheimer’s Disease Support Association (SABAHAZ), Sabah Council of Social Services (MPMS), and Lions Clubs International District 308A2 are jointly organizing the Dementia Awareness Fun Run 2025, scheduled for October 5 at the Likas Sports Complex, Kota Kinabalu.
QEH geriatrician Dr Gordon Pang said the event carries the theme “See The Person, Not The Disease”.
He said it aims to cultivate empathy and understanding towards individuals living with dementia, urging the community to recognize their rights, dignity, and potential.
Gordon emphasized the importance of the initiative, stating, “This journey is not easy, but through close collaboration and a spirit of cooperation between agencies, we are moving towards positive change. Every step in this run is a step towards awareness, empathy, and hope.”The event features two participation categories designed to include all ages and abilities: a 1KM Walk/Wheel for seniors and children, and a 5KM run for more active participants.
Organizers anticipate over 1,000 participants, making it the first event of its kind in Sabah to unite multiple generations, including children and the elderly, in support of dementia awareness.
