First human volunteer vaccinated against Bundibugyo strain of Ebola

  • The University of Oxford's Oxford Vaccine Group has vaccinated the first volunteer in the world's inaugural clinical trial for a vaccine against the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola.
  • This marks the first human administration of the ChAdOx1 BDBV vaccine, which was developed by Oxford scientists using the same technology as the Oxford/AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine.
  • Bundibugyo has been tearing through the Democratic Republic of Congo, with 3,262 confirmed cases and 1,437 deaths.
  • The Serum Institute of India has manufactured 620,000 doses of the vaccine in record time and supplied 4,000 investigational doses for the trial.
  • The study team will continue recruiting volunteers, with preparations underway for further clinical studies in Uganda.
