Azerbaijan's Foreign Ministry has reported the deaths of five Azerbaijani nationals following a drone strike on cargo ships in the Sea of Azov, citing information from Russia.
Moscow informed Baku of the attack, according to the ministry's statement issued on Friday. The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry made no comment on the origin of the drones.
The ministry said the vessels were not owned by the Azerbaijani state. A total of 25 Azerbaijani nationals had been on board. Three people were injured in the strike.
Several staff from the Azerbaijani embassy in Russia were on their way to the scene.
Late on Thursday evening, authorities in the southern Russian city of Taganrog triggered a drone alert.
Ukraine repeatedly targets southern Russia with drone strikes. Kiev's military takes aim at refineries, pumping stations and ports in the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea that are important for the export of Russian oil.
Such attacks are intended to disrupt fuel supplies to the Russian army and make it harder for the Kremlin to finance the war. Ukraine has been defending itself against Russia's invasion with Western military and financial support for more than four years.
