SIBU: Five men were arrested after a clash between two armed groups in Lorong Wong King Huo here yesterday, prior to which a car driven by one of them had knocked down and killed an elderly man.
Sibu district police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili (pix) said the suspects were aged between 17 and 30.
He said police rushed to the scene after they were informed of the fight at 6.45 am, believed due to a dispute over debts.
“Police arrested all the suspects and seized a Toyota Lexus, a Perodua Alza and weapons like two Kwantao (Chinese pole weapon) and a cane,” he said in a statement today.
He said investigations showed that the two groups were involved in a car chase and that one of them had run over a 71-year-old motorcyclist in Jalan Alan, about two kilometres from the scene of the fight.
Urine tests found all the suspects positive for amphetamine, methamphetamine, ketamine, benzodiazepines and morphine, he said.
They have been remanded until Oct 27 for investigation under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting with weapons and Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing a fatal accident.
Zulkipli said police viewed such incidents seriously and would act against anyone who caused a disturbance and disrupted public order. -Bernama
